History of Wizards Logos

Posted on December 17, 2007 by futuregrace

Tomorrow we will look at fan made logos and the next day other teams that share the name wizards logos. Today we look at the history of the Kansas City Wizards Logo. My favorite is the one we currently have, though that doesn’t mean much as I don’t care for it either. I am looking forward to a new logo and will not buy many items until that day comes, yet I understand if they want to wait until the new stadium opens since most teams have been doing that.

1996, rumored to be product of Nike. Anything with this logo on it is quite rare today.

Continue on to see more.

Here is an alternate logo used during the Wizards first season in 1996.

1997-2006

The majority of our history has been with the logo above. I’ve met many people who said they just couldn’t support a team with a rainbow on it. Some due to the homosexual connection and others because it was too childish. The more I look at it though they less it looks like a “rainbow” at all. I’m looking forward to a new badge/crest in the future.

2007 – present

In many ways an improvement over the last one. Yet there is no sense of color to it. It really needs something.

One game in 2007

This logo was used in honor of Lamar Hunt in one game in 2007 against FC Dallas, one of the other teams owned by Lamar Hunt. The papers reported at the time that Lamar loved the original logo and so had Chad Reynolds, an in house graphic artist, make something similar to honor his name. The star above it represents the Wizards 2000 MLS CUP title.

Just a point on the Lamar logo, they didn’t commission a graphic artist per say. The logo was done by Wizards employee Chad Reynolds. Commission implies (at least to me) that they hired someone outside to do it.

And btw, I’m the proud owner of two jerseys (home and away) and at least one t-shirt with the old logo on it.

I kinda like the LH one, it is simple and yet interesting, though I really do think we could do much better with our logo. A good logo I think gives people a better opinion of the team where a dumb logo makes people less interested in a first impression type of way.

The “LH” logo was designed for the first ever “Kansas City Wizards Founder’s Day: A Tribute To Lamar Hunt.”

When we first began discussing things we could do to honor Mr. Hunt’s memory, we (OnGoal and the Wizards) decided we wanted to wear a special commemorative patch on our kits. This logo was originally designed to be that patch. As the league came in and released the “official” patch that Dallas and Columbus would wear, we backed off on using this patch and instead used it on merchandise for the Founder’s Day game. It was used on everything from the flags flying over Arrowhead (and presented to the Hunt family by OnGoal) and on the special-edition kit itself. Those kits were then auctioned off with the proceeds going to the Kansas City Soccer Foundation and to help those affected by the Greensburg tornado.

The logo itself mimics the shape & style of the original “Wiz” logo, substituting Mr. Hunt’s initials in where the original “Wiz” moniker stood, and making nods to the club’s founding in 1996 and its championship in 2000. The logo was approved by the Hunt family prior to its usage, and I’m told Norma Hunt was particularly fond of it.
